This server was set up by Independence the summer of 2006. In the autumn of the same year, public registration opened. Now, the server has been up and stable for about half a year, and everything seems to work out as planned. = About =

Before this server was taken into service, there was an older machine that served as shellhost for me and some close friends. When I got this new machine, I first opened up to the same people as before. But I felt that the server and I could handle more users, and that's when I decided to make this a publicly available free shell server. As this seems to work out, I intend to keep the server running and adding more services as they are needed. If you have any idea, you can discuss it with me. Blinkenshell.org is a free UNIX shell host. What this basically means is that we have a UNIX-server, where you can create an account and login to run your programs, for free. Why would you like to run your programs on some other machine than your own? Well, there are several reasons. Maybe your connection is losy, but you want to be connected to IRC without being disconnected all the time. Maybe you want to be able to turn your computer off when you go to sleep, but still have some programs running. Or maybe, you want to use some program that you can't/don't want to install, for examlpe you want to publish a website but can't serve it from your home box. Maybe you don't have access to a UNIX-system but you want to learn how to use one. There are lots and lots of reasons for using a shell host, it's a very powerful and flexible service (but also requires quite a lot from the user.)

Blinkenshells main server is named Titan, and was set up by me (JohanMarcusson) in the summer of 2006. Later that autumn, I opened up for public access. The service has now been running for almost a year, and things seems to be working out really good. I will keep this service running for as long as me and my users still have an interrest in having it. You are very welcome to help out with running this thing if you want, just talk to JohanMarcusson (aka independence).

My reasons for running the server is a mix of several things; firstly, I do need/use it myself, I think it's a great way to learn about UNIX, networking etc and I also have some kind of personal need to be of use to others (however weird that may sound to you ;-) )

I run this project as a hobby of mine, and I do not intend to make any money on the project. However, donations are very welcome and greatly appreciated. Cash or hardware is good, or anything else you can come up with ;) See [:Info/Donations:Donations].

If there is anything else you would like to know, you can ask in the [:Info/IRC:chat].

If you want to sign up for an account, take a look at the [:Info/Signup:signup info].

Happy hacking!
