This server was set up by Independence the summer of 2006. In the autumn of the same year, public registration opened. Now, the server has been up and stable for about half a year, and everything seems to work out as planned.

Before this server was taken into service, there was an older machine that served as shellhost for me and some close friends. When I got this new machine, I first opened up to the same people as before. But I felt that the server and I could handle more users, and that's when I decided to make this a publicly available free shell server. As this seems to work out, I intend to keep the server running and adding more services as they are needed. If you have any idea, you can discuss it with me. Blinkenshell.org is a free UNIX shell provider. It was founded by Johan Marcusson, aka Independence or Indy, in the summer of 2006. If you want to know more about shell accounts in general, take a look here: ["Shell Account"].

Blinkenshell is focused on creating a good service and a good community. There are a few things we aim to do, sort of goals if you want:
 * Create good and reliable service
 * Create an open and friendly community
 * Support open protocols
 * Support open source/free software
 * Provide strong integrity
 * Provide strong security

We do a few things to ensure or work towards these goals. Firstly, participating in the community is required to get an account. You are encouraged help out by answering questions from new users and so on. All communication with the server is done with encrypted protocols (SSH). Both remote logins and file transfers are done this way to ensure strong security. Also, strong passwords are enforced. We do not give out emails or user information to any third party, only people involved in running Blinkenshell.

If you want to sign up for an account, take a look here: [:Info/Signup:Signup]. If you would like to help out in some way, please talk JohanMarcusson.

My reasons for running this project and providing access to my computer for free is a mix of several things. Firstly, I do need/use the service myself, so why not let others use it also? I think it's a great way to learn about new stuff UNIX, networking etc and to talk to others with similar interests. I also have some kind of personal need to be of use to others, however weird that may sound to you :-)

I run this project as a hobby of mine, and I do not intend to make any money on the project. However, donations are very welcome and greatly appreciated. Cash or hardware is good, or anything else you can come up with ofcourse. More info: [:Info/Donations:Donations].

If there is anything else you would like to know, you can ask in the [:Info/IRC:chat] or talk to JohanMarcusson directly.

Happy hacking!
