This server was set up by me, [:JohanMarcusson:Independence], in the summer of 2006. In the autumn of the same year, public registration opened. Now, the server has been up and running for more than half a year, and things are working great! :)

Before this machine was taken into service, there was an older one that served as shellhost for me and some friends. When I got this new machine, I first opened it up to the same people as before. But I felt that the server and I could handle more users, and that's when I decided to make this a publicly available free shell server. As this seems to work out very good, I intend to keep the server running and adding more services as they are needed until either I myself or the users lose interest in the project. My reasons for running the server is a mix of several things; firstly, I do need/use it myself, I think it's a great way to learn about UNIX, networking etc and I also have some kind of personal need to be of use to others (however weird that may sound :P). Blinkenshell.org is a free UNIX shell provider. It was founded by Johan Marcusson, aka Independence or Indy, in the summer of 2006. If you want to know more about shell accounts in general, take a look here: Shell_Account.

I run this project as a hobby of mine, and I do not intend to make any money on the project. However, donations are very welcome and greatly appreciated. Cash or hardware is good, or anything else you can come up with ;) See [:Info/Donations:Donations]. Blinkenshell is focused on creating a good service and a good community. There are a few things we aim to do, sort of goals if you want:
 * Create good and reliable service
 * Create an open and friendly community
 * Support open protocols
 * Support open source/free software
 * Provide strong integrity
 * Provide strong security

We do a few things to ensure or work towards these goals. Firstly, participating in the community is required to get an account. You are encouraged help out by answering questions from new users and so on. All communication with the server is done with encrypted protocols (SSH). Both remote logins and file transfers are done this way to ensure strong security. Also, strong passwords are enforced. We do not give out emails or user information to any third party, only people involved in running Blinkenshell.

If you want to sign up for an account, take a look here: Signup. If you would like to help out in some way, please talk JohanMarcusson.

My reasons for running this project and providing access to my computer for free is a mix of several things. Firstly, I do need/use the service myself, so why not let others use it also? I think it's a great way to learn about new stuff UNIX, networking etc and to talk to others with similar interests. I also have some kind of personal need to be of use to others, however weird that may sound to you :-)

I run this project as a hobby of mine, and I do not intend to make any money on the project. However, donations are very welcome and greatly appreciated. Cash or hardware is good, or anything else you can come up with ofcourse. More info: Donations.

If there is anything else you would like to know, you can ask in the chat or talk to JohanMarcusson directly.

Happy hacking!
