Blinkenshell.org is a free UNIX shell host. What this basically means is that we have a UNIX-server, where you can create an account and login to run your programs, for free. Why would you like to run your programs on some other machine than your own? Well, there are several reasons. Maybe your connection is losy, but you want to be connected to IRC without being disconnected all the time. Maybe you want to be able to turn your computer off when you go to sleep, but still have some programs running. Or maybe, you want to use some program that you can't/don't want to install, for examlpe you want to publish a website but can't serve it from your home box. Maybe you don't have access to a UNIX-system but you want to learn how to use one. There are lots and lots of reasons for using a shell host, it's a very powerful and flexible service (but also requires quite a lot from the user.) Blinkenshell.org is a free UNIX shell provider. It was founded by Johan Marcusson, aka Independence or Indy, in the summer of 2006. If you want to know more about shell accounts in general, take a look here: ["Shell Account"].

Blinkenshells main server is named Titan, and was set up by me (JohanMarcusson) in the summer of 2006. Later that autumn, I opened up for public access. The service has now been running for almost a year, and things seems to be working out really good. I will keep this service running for as long as me and my users still have an interrest in having it. You are very welcome to help out with running this thing if you want, just talk to JohanMarcusson (aka independence). Blinkenshell is focused on creating a good service and a good community. There are a few things we aim to do, sort of goals if you want:
 * Create good and reliable service
 * Create an open and friendly community
 * Support open protocols
 * Support open source/free software
 * Provide strong integrity
 * Provide strong security
Line 7: Line 13:
My reasons for running the server is a mix of several things; firstly, I do need/use it myself, I think it's a great way to learn about UNIX, networking etc and I also have some kind of personal need to be of use to others (however weird that may sound to you ;-) ) We do a few things to ensure or work towards these goals. Firstly, participating in the community is required to get an account. You are encouraged help out by answering questions from new users and so on. All communication with the server is done with encrypted protocols (SSH). Both remote logins and file transfers are done this way to ensure strong security. Also, strong passwords are enforced. We do not give out emails or user information to any third party, only people involved in running Blinkenshell.
