First of all, there are a couple of requirements you have to fulfill before signing up: == Requirements ==
First of all, you have to be able to communicate in English. Maybe you already do, because you can read this :)
Line 5: Line 6:
 * An email address that you check regularily and are going to keep for a while, preferably an ISP-mail. If you don't have one, you can get one with the shell. You also need a mail address. If you don't already have one, you can get one with the shell, talk to Independence.
Line 7: Line 8:
 * Access to a mobile phone or other device with SMS-capability.
 * You have to have a registered account at Shellsnet ( the IRC-network where our chat channel is located, website here: http://www.shellsnet.org/ . Registered with Nickserv that is, not registered on their wiki! )
 * You have to be able to speak English.
Next, follow these steps:
Lastly, you need some means of establising IRL-contact. The standard way of doing this is by recieving an SMS, but a postcard or something like that would also work if you don't have a cellphone. Another way might to make a [:Info/Donations:donation].

 1. Add your name on the list of interrested users here: ["Users"]
 1. Hang around in the IRC-channel for some time (about a week) and try to get and know us. You have to be somewhat active, stats is available here so you can see how active you are: http://shell.blinkenlights.se/rhea/~blinkenbot/ If there is no conversation at the moment, start one yourself, someone is probably listening.
 1. Send me a pm and I'll ask you some questions about you, your intentions with the shell and so on. If you answer in a good way, you will be given an activasion code.
 1. Use the activasion code to login to the signup program. Here you will validate your email and phone (SMS) aswell as aswering some more questions and doing a quiz.
 1. When you're done with all that, I'll review the application and manually create an account if everything looks allright.
Please read all the relevant information on this webpage so you know what this type of service this is before you start applying for an account.
You should be active in the IRC-channel, both before and after you get your account.

== Getting an account ==
To get an account, you have to complete a rather long signup process. Not in terms of time necessarily, but there are quite a few steps. This involves setting up several accounts. Firstly, you register your nickname on our home IRC network, you then create an account in the signup program (please use the same or at least similar nicknames!). If everything goes well then you will get a real system account on the server. Please read all the relevant information on this webpage (especially rules and the information pages) so you know what this type of service this is before you start applying for an account! Follow these steps and you should have an account in a couple of days:

 1. Join our IRC-channel #blinkenshell @ irc.systemshell.net or irc.overloadx.net. Register your nickname with the NickServ bot. Type "/msg nickserv help register" to get help on registering your nickname or take a look at: ["Howto/Register Nickname"].
 1. Go to the page ["Info/Login"] and follow the instructions to log on to the shell server.
 1. Once logged in to the server, you can run the shell signup program. There are six steps in this program that you have to complete to get an account. When you run this program, you first have to create an account for the signup process. You will ''not'' be able to log in to the system via ssh with this account! Take a look at the bottom of this page for some tips.

 1. Now you will have to get two registered users to vouch (approve) for you. Just join the chat on IRC (if you havn't already) and start talking to us! :) Note, however, that it is considered bad taste to start chasing everyone in the channel around for vouches. Several people come every day hunting for vouches - if we are to be responsible vouchers, we can't approve you all at once. If you give us something to remember you by, and it isn't just "annoying", you'll probably not have a problem getting vouches. If This step should take a day or two.
 1. You can now complete the last step in the signup program, the SMS activation. Log in with the signup user, and then with the signup account you created when you first ran the signup program. Try and make sure you ''get your number right the first time!'' Use the "test our gateway" on the right side on this page before you enter the number in the signup program: http://www.clickatell.com/brochure/coverage/coverage.php The SMS should arrive within a copule of minutes, usually in seconds. The SMS is free on your part, you don't have to pay anything. I do however pay a small fee for this every time someone sends an SMS, if you would like to help pay for this service please consider a [:Info/Donations:donation].

 1. When you're done with all that, I'll review your application and manually create an account if everything looks allright. Good luck!
You can see what step you are currently at in the signup program at this page: http://signup.blinkenshell.org/

Feel free to ask us in the chat channel if you have any questions about the service.

I expect you to log in to the IRC-channel once in a while, even after you get your account. Please add #blinkenshell to your autojoin channels in your IRC client, and autoidentify with nickserv is probably a good idea too.

== Misc info/FAQ ==
If you fail the quiz the first time, you can try again. There is no limit on how many times you can take the quiz, but you have to wait five minutes before you try again. Do not try and guess answers, you will have to understand the questions and answers. Also, you have to get every single question right in one pass.

In the signup program, you create an account for the signup process. You will not be able to log in to the system (SSH) with this account. This account is only valid in the signup program, and you have to start the signup program by logging in with the user signup. So, first log in with the signup user and when you are in you can use the account with the name/password you created.

Sometimes it takes a long time go get to the next step when you are at step 6. This is because the administrator has to manually check up on some things, and he doesn't always remember to do it. Just ask him nicely on IRC when he's around and it will probably be done before long. '''Also, remember to try and be active on IRC!'''

Step 4 may seem scary to some. If your english is weak, remember that many of us aren't native english speakers either - try us, and you'll find out that we're quite understanding. If you don't know what to say when entering a quiet IRC channel, try telling us what you do, who you are, why you want the shell, or something like that. We don't want an essay, but say something.
