Hi there, and welcome to Blinkenshell.org! This is a '''free UNIX shell provider''', I (JohanMarcusson aka Independence) provide free shell accounts on a Linux server provided that you actively participate in our community and follow the rules and guidelines.

This is a great place to be if you are looking for somewhere to learn about ["UNIX"], learn about programming/scripting or if you just want to use ["IRC"]. The service is intended to create a community with users who are curious to learn more about computers and related technologies. [:Info/About:More info]. This is a great place to be if you are looking for somewhere to learn more about ["UNIX"], networking, programming etc or if you just want a nice place to run your [:Info/IRC:IRC]-client from or host your webpage at. You can read more about what's included in the offer below, and yes - it's all free! Take a look at some more common ["UsageScenarios"].

The server is located in my basement and is not intended for any commercial use. It doesn't cost anything to use and does not provide any guaranteed uptime, availability, quality of service or any warranty. Blinkenshell is now a fairly mature shell provider, the service has been online for over a year now and we've passed 100 users some time ago. We're still accepting new members ofcourse, and we're expanding the community. If you want to sign up, take a look at the [:Info/Signup:Signup Info].

== Server problems! ==
I'm experiencing some problems with the server. It started out with some minor glitch with version incompatabilities between different versions of glibc, and has now escalated and made the whole system unable to start any programs at all, you can not even log in to the system.

Since the system is so badly broken, I decided to replace the whole vserver guest system (like a big chroot) with a new one. All users files are however safe and will be waiting for their users on the new guest system.

I don't have any ETA for when everything will be up and running as usual, but I'm working on fixing the system right now. I'm also taking this opportunity to make some upgrades of lowlevel software and file system changes that I've been waiting to make.

I've been working hard all night and I'm happy to say that everything seems to be working again. However, all passwords are reset. Come to our IRC-channel or send an email and I'll send you your new password!
If you have any questions or just want to talk to us, come on in and join the [:Info/IRC:chat channel]!
Line 25: Line 16:
 * There is currently some problems with the shell box, no one will be able to log in. Stay tuned for more info...
 * Blinkenshell is about to move to a new IRC-network because shellsnet is closing down. There is a new channel called #blinkenshell that's available on the IRC-servers irc.systemshell.net and irc.overloadx.net The new doesn't got a website or a name yet, but work is going on.
 * Everything is working fine, we are accepting new registrations.
